History: During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Hudson Bay area, located in present-day Canada, played an important role in European exploration and the fur trade. Nicolas Bellin, a French cartographer, created his map "Carte de la Baye de Hudson" in 1757, during a period when European powers were competing for control of the lucrative fur trade in North America.

 

Early exploration (17th century): The Hudson Bay region was initially explored by European navigators seeking a northwest passage to Asia. In 1610, English explorer Henry Hudson sailed into the bay that now bears his name while searching for a route to the Pacific Ocean. Although Hudson's expedition was ultimately unsuccessful, it marked the beginning of European interest in the area.

Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772).
In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy.
