Antique map of the Alsace - Lorraine. Historically, the area was at the centre of Charlemagne’s Frankish empire in the 9th century and later became part of the Germanys of the Holy Roman Empire, remaining a German territory under various sovereignties up to the Thirty Years’ War. The Peace of Westphalia (1648) concluding that war gave control of Alsace-Lorraine to France.
Origin: Meyers Konversations-Lexikon published by the Bibliographic Institute Germany 1902–08. The company was founded in 1826 by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) as a publishing bookstore in Gotha and later moved to Hildburghausen. Under the direction of his son Herrmann Julius Meyer, the company moved to Leipzig in 1874.
