Description: Old engraved print of the town Nanjing (then spelled Nanking) China, copperplate engraved with hand coloring.
The engraving is based on the sketches of Johan Niehof, in 1655 Johan Nieuhof visited the old city. In his book Het Gezantschap Der Neerlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie (1665) he described as one of the first Europeans Chinese buildings and residents.
Mapmaker: Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. Published in Antonine de Prevost d' Exile's Histoire generale des voyages.
