Description: Detailed Old Map of Florida, the Caribbean islands and the Gulf Coast, included the track of Juan Ponce de León, an Spanish explorer was searching for the "Fountain of Youth," a fabled water source that was said to bring eternal youth. Ponce de Leon named the peninsula "La Florida" because his discovery came during the Easter feast, or Pascua Florida. Also De Cordova track in 1517 and Cortez' route in 1519.
Original 18th century map, copperplate engraved with hand coloring and ornate with a decorative title cartouche. Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772). In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographical Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King.
Engraver: Jakob van der Schley aka Jakob van Schley (1715 Amsterdam – 1779 Amsterdam) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart (1673-1733).
