Nicolaes Visscher I (1618-1679 ) was a Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher. He belonged to the Dutch art dealer, engraver and publishing dynasty founded by his father Claes Janszoon Visscher.
After his father's death in 1652, he took over his art publishing business and initially continued to publish the atlases and maps his father had started. Then he began to publish works under his own name. Together with his son Nicolaes Visscher II (1649–1702) he engraved a large number of copper printing plates, with which he further supplemented the publisher's stock. About 170 tables can be found in the atlases "Atlas Contractus", "Atlas Minor" and "Germania Inferior". Two surviving publishers' catalogs from 1677 and 1682, however, list far more art prints than cartographic material.
After Visscher's death in 1679, the card publishing business was continued first by his son and then by his widow Elisabeth Verseyl. After her death Andries de Leth, an employee of Nicolaes Visscher II, took over the publishing house and the name "In de Visscher" remained. Some of the Visschers' copper plates later reached Petrus Schenk II (1693-1775), who used them for numerous reprints.
